Why the Kokako needs our help
The Kokako is an endemic and endangered bird to New Zealand. Sadly the South Island species has already been wiped out and under 1400 of the North Island species have survived. Kokako's lived in New Zealand when there were very few mammal species so there was no need to fly so it adapted to only flutter from branch to branch. Now that other mammals have been introduced the Kokako is stuck on the forest floor while possums, stoats, rats and feral cats roam. Their extinction has also been due to forest clearance.
By getting rid of the majority of the possum population we can stop a predator of Kokako chicks and also eliminate one of their competitors for food.
